Xiarong Shi, PhD, is a molecular and cell biologist and biopharma consultant with more than 15 years of experience in oncology discovery, functional genomics, gene editing, and clinical assay development and validation. Dr. Shi earned a PhD from UMass Chan Medical School, where their research focused on metabolic diseases, including diabetes and obesity, and completed postdoctoral training at Yale School of Medicine in cancer cell biology and receptor tyrosine kinase signaling, where he also established CRISPR screening platform with industrial collaborator.
Across roles at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Tome Biosciences, Sarepta Therapeutics, and Cellarity—as well as consulting engagements with organizations including Precision BioSciences and Seamless Therapeutics—Dr. Shi has led multidisciplinary programs spanning discovery research, platform development, clinical assay strategy, and gene-therapy translation.
Their experience includes leading large-scale, genome-wide CRISPR screening programs from library design and execution through hit validation; establishing and operating screening and sequencing cores; and developing, qualifying, and validating ddPCR- and NGS-based biomarker assays to support clinical programs. Dr. Shi has also managed CRO partnerships supporting gene-therapy clinical programs and contributed to regulatory strategy for gene-therapy INDs.
Dr. Shi’s research work spans tremendous amount of cell lines as well as iPS cells and primary cells, Perturb-seq dataset generation for AI/ML applications, sequencing-based functional genomics, and translational assay development. They bring a practical, end-to-end perspective—from experimental design and operational execution to data generation, interpretation, and regulatory readiness.
